Sweatember

10 days down, 49 to go.

Still I like the way it's looking. Not quite like in the photo but ok on its own. I'm going to learn a lot of new knitting stuff on this sweater, like sleeves, a neck, armhole steeks and new way to bind off.

One thing at a time. I'm working my way up. Right now I'm learning to knit a sweater.
Let everyone else enjoy Socktoberfest; for me it's still Sweatember.

Wow, this is your first sweater? Very gutsy! It's not harder than a "plain" sweater, but you have to pay attention. I have yet to brave steeks myself (mostly because I keep getting sidetracked by non-steekable yarns), but I'm sure you'll manage admirably. From one feet-first knitter to another: Congratulations! And happy knitting!

Thanks Marisa. I am pretty worried about the steeks, but I am working under what I call the "tunnel theory": Today I have not done the steeks, and one day soon I will have, and the rest is just like a train going through the tunnel -- at some point I will be at the other end.

I have little doubt that it will be ok. I have been reading up on steeking and have decided to go with crochet steeks, for several reasons.

First, they look much nicer than other kinds (I know you won't see them from the outside, but I always like the idea of buildings where the builder puts in all kinds of neat things that you don't see but are there anyway).

Second, they apparently are more flexible and easy to move than some machine steek stitches. Sinces these are armholes, that could be pretty important.

Third, I don't have a sewing machine and am not practiced enough at hand stitching that I would feel confident in doing a steek with needle and thread.

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. I will surely talk about the steeking in this blog when it's over.
